Midnight Wake Up Call From the Police!

*NO PICS IN THIS POST BUT WORTH THE READ*

Last night started out lovely, Hubby, Bosco and I all passed out early and decided to call it a night.

Then at midnight we had the most frightening thing that has ever happened to us. Our bedroom door swung open, bright flashlight moving, gun pointing, with a man yelling at us “ Sherriff, please show me your hands”, Hubby grabbed his bat that is under the bed and yelled back at the man, “Get out of my house, show me our badge!”. I quickly rolled out of bed on to the floor hiding behind the bed.

We then saw that it WAS a Sherriff and he as soon as he saw that we were not going to do any harm to him he put his gun away and we turned on the light. He then proceeded to yell at us and tell Hubby he almost shot him(with a lot of other profanity in there). I was shaking so badly and so disoriented!!! Hubby stepped outside with the officer who proceeded to tell him that he had rang our door bell, knocked on all of our doors and he couldn’t believe we didn’t hear him.

Hubby, Bosco and I must be pretty deep sleepers(which is freighting if it was a burglar). We then found out that  it was our neighbor who had called the Police. They had seen that our garage door was left open so they first came over and knocked on our door and rang the doorbell and we never answered so they were worried (talk about some nice neighbors). They had a bad neighborhood experience once, where some of their friends had left their garage door open and got burglarized while they were sleeping and they didn’t want the same thing to happen to us. So they called the Police to come check on us.

Well check on us they did!! Man I can’t believe that really happened last night, just typing about it still gives me the chills. I know that the Police are their to protect us, but I sure felt violated. Hubby and I couldn’t go to sleep so we stayed up and watch some Dave Chappell and ate cereal to try and calm our nerves.

Being waken up in the middle of the night is never fun put by a POLICE OFFICER is the worst!

What a stressful week between the fires and Police wake up I need a week off!!!

Needless to say, I didn’t get in a run, no pancakes were made, but we did manage to make it to Church. I am sitting at my favorite “office” the local Coffee Shop enjoying a cup of Vanilla Chai while tackling my Google Task list!

Have you ever had a scary encounter with the Police??

P.S. Check out my guest post over at Run EAT Repeat…Our Honeymoon!

I'm think that's scary. I would have freaked out...someone doing that in my place. Doesn't sound like a smart cop though, the way you described him. He should have shined his light and seen ppl sleeping in the bed. DUH! He should have turned on the light immediately before he injured someone. Here on the news in Tx, ppl are always shooting intruders, which turnout to be cops or neighbors worried (in dallas) Too Scary

OMG..that is awful! I am so glad that you are ok. We had the same thing happen to us when we lived in our apartment. They almost broke our door down! Scared us half to death. They thought we called 911 but we did not!

Wow! That is absolutely terrifying! I'm so surprised Bosco did not alert you guys. I've a very deep sleeper, but our dog howls if he hears someone outside our house at night (we were alerted by him a month ago because there were teenager on our lawn at 2am).

I can't believe you let a little thing likes cops busting into your bedroom in the middle of the night with their guns drawn keep you from a quality pancake breakfast... Awesome!

Our experience was more funny than scary (although it scared the crap out of me at first). We had a cigarrete smoking hooker walk into our bedroom a little after midnite one nite. My wife had left the fron door unlocked, and she had her address mixed up(she was looking for Jerry, and was suprised I was upset, it was an honest mistake)...

I chased her down the street in my underware :)

Dang, I think I would have peed my pants. And I mean, why would he have almost shot y'all when you were clearly in the bed? And how the heck did they even get in? Wow...

Better to be awoken by the police than burglers. Frightening, yes but better than the alternative.

OMG that's crazy! I am so grateful that we have police officers to protect us but it's kind of scary to think that they are allowed to break their way into anyone's home. Something similar happened to my maid of honor a few years back. They permanently dented her door in several places. I guess it's their job to assume the worst is going on behind the closed door but still....I'm sorry that happened sweetie! :*( I would have peed my pants or something lol.

Ahhh crazy!! One time at my house I woke up to a huge bang and yelling. I ran to my parents room and we watched out the window as police ran through out backyard chasing some man. They were yelling "Stop or I'll shoot!" Needless to say we were quite frightened. Guess they were chasing a burglar and he cut through our backyard. Ahhh!

That is SO scary but I'm glad it was a cop and not a burglar!

I would have cried for the rest of the night.

Wow! And to just bust on in like that in your bedroom. Crazy! I'm not quite sure what we would have done in that situation. Goodness. I'm glad you all are okay!

Glad to know you're all safe. I have a very tiny door knocker on my door. Wouldn't hear anyone knocking if I was in my bedroom. Would have to bang on that sucker!

Everything happens for a reason. Lessons learned? 1) Louder doorbell 2) bigger door knocker on door 3) lock all doors & garage door before ending the day 4) be cautious of meddling neighbors 5) perhaps a self-defense class may be in order (than a baseball bat)?

My dad always locked & closed everything before going to bed when we were just kids in Canada. Learned that habit from him even now as an adult. Then again there's just me to keep me safe. LOL. Would take a self-defense class if I could manage it in my budget. Well worth the investment. :-)

That sounds like a scary situation. Have you checked with a lawyer regarding your rights in that situation?

That sounds crazy! I'm really surprised they'd just barge in like that! I've had some strange police encounters but nothing scary like that!!

Wow! Is that allowed?? I mean, sure the garage was open and you didn't answer the door.. but can cops just come in your house like that?! Isn't that a HUGE invasion of privacy?? What if you were not home? It is nice that they were checking on you, but having your garage door open is not an invitation for them to come wandering into your house uninvited. I would have HUGE problem with this.
