Doc Says I Have to Give Up Raw Veggies

When I was at the Doctors for my annual physical, I told her about my constant tummy aches, and she came to the conclusion that it’s all the RAW veggies I eat! She said that for some people raw veggies don’t digest as easily and if they are steamed or grilled they go down easier, I am not completely sold on this idea, I might need a second opinion. This week I am going to steam all my veggies and hope that they make my tummy feel better.

Does anyone else have this problem? I must do some research on this.

I love raw veggies and love my salads, but I definitely understand why your doc suggested that. I try to vary it up with both cooked and raw veggies and it works for me. (Plus some veggies actually increase in some nutrients when they're cooked. The iron in spinach increases dramatically when it's cooked, as does the lycopene in tomatoes).

And yes I have food allergies! HUGE, deathly allergy to tree nuts, tummy issues with dairy (not sure if it's an actual allergy, but my stomach does not do well with it), and shellfish isn't too grand for me either.

Hmm, I've heard of this concept before, but I thought it was only if one was consuming MASSIVE amounts and not balancing with other nutrients, which you, obvioulsy are doing. But everyone and every tummy is different and maybe the excess fiber is not digesting well for you. If the steemed veggies don't work, you could also try to take a suppliment to help in the digestion of fiber (like Beano or Womens One a DAy for Digestive Health)
Good luck and keep us posted! :)

i get stomach cramps and major gas when i eat lots of raw veggies, but i just cant help myself!! plus they seem so much healthier than cooked, even if you're just steaming. sigh...

Bobbi-

As you know everyone's system is different. The tummy aches could be from raw veggies,(or not)but it certainly won't hurt to leave off the raw veggies long enough to see if it helps. You've got nothing to lose and it might help. Hope your tummy feels better soon!

I don't EXACTLY have that problem but I do know that when I do have a tummy ache of any kind I have to stay well clear of all raw fruit and veggies and salads. They just don't agree with me if there is already an underlying issue.

I have that problem with raw veggies but only when I eat a TON of them! I hope trying this helps your tummy feel better!

I'm sorry to hear about your... diagnosis? I must say, I chew brocolli 100 times when it's raw because otherwise I feel it in my stomach for hours.

raw squash always makes me sick, it took a while to figure this out, but now I'm almost afraid to eat it even cooked

Do you take acidophilus or other friendly bacteria? I have found that a daily acidophilus tablet helps my stomach to stay on track better, regardless of what I eat. I have heard the raw veggie thing too. Some people just have a harder time with them.

A simple cooking, even to the slightest tenderness can help a lot. I rarely eat raw items like broccoli or cauliflower, but I like them to be somewhat crunchy when I do eat them. A quick turn in steam or even in boiling water makes them easier to manage. It's extra work, but worth it.

I hope you find the relief you need. Constant stomach issues are no fun at all.

I went to my chiropractor about 2 weeks ago, and he told me the SAME thing! I was having stomach aches constantly and can definitely tell a difference now that I've been paying attention: raw veggies (as an entire meal) will hurt my stomach, cooked veggies will not. Small amounts (like carrots w/ hummus) don't bother me, but lots of roughage at once almost always results in stomach pains (like a huge salad with lots of raw veggies thrown in). Almonds sometimes give me a tummy ache too. I've learned that I really just have to remember moderation in healthy foods, too. I'm glad I'm not the only one affected!! Personally, I think cooked/sauteed/steamed veggies are better anyway...brings out the flavors! Love your blog :)

I USED to have food allergies. Dairy and wheat used to upset my stomach. The dairy wasn't as bad as the wheat though, and the wheat took me MUCH longer to figure out. The cause? One word...STRESS. Stress does crazy things to your body. I am no longer a stressed out person and I've never felt better. Hope you get your tummy troubles figured out!

I am allergic to nuts and seeds (sesame seeds, poppy seeds, etc). I am the only person in my family with any sort of allergy!

I used to be majorly lactose intolerant. I grew out of it, but large amounts of dairy give me some issues.

Have you thought it could be a fiber issue? At one point I was getting too much and it caused a few issues.

i have no idea what's up with your tummy, but i do know that every body is different! I'm sure the doc doesn't know for sure either, but it would be best to try it out and see if it helps before ordering lots of expensive tests. hope you figure out the cause soon!

ps- i know i'm late, but that shower was amazing!!! what a great job you did :)

I have some tummy issues with a lot of dairy, but I don't have any "real" food allergies. My husband, however, is deathly allergic to all nuts except for almonds...so I have to eat my PB at work :)

i get stomach problems from eating 2 many raw veggies too. alot of gas. sick to actually talk about it, but its true! But i can't bare not to eat raw veggies, they are my favorite! I'm interested to know how your week goes steaming instead of raw. Maybe it'll answer up some questions for me as well! good luck girl!

in highschool, i ate raw veggies at lunch almost everyday.. and by the next class, i always had either heartburn or a stomach ache. :/

c'est la vie. gotta love those crunchy babies though.

Maybe you can eat less of it? I don't think I have any food allergies, but I do notice my throat tightening up when I eat too much ice cream. It's bittersweet since it's a sign that I have gone over the limit, but sometimes ice cream just tastes soo good.

You know, if I eat too many raw carrots and brocolli, I feel bloated and very uncomfortable. weird.

That really can bother some people's tummies. This summer I started eating a lot of raw veggies and I had stomach pains afterwards sometimes. J's dad has trouble eating raw veggies, too. Hope you can figure out what will work for you.

I've never heard of not being able to digest raw vegetables. Who would have thought?

No allergies here, but my poor husband is allergic to fruit. Awful!

I know some people have a hard time ingesting raw veggies, I would look into enzymes.

the 30 day fast is VERY interesting. i think everyone should be aware of it!
I am sensitive to milk products, especially heavy creams and cheeses. my boyfriend has strange alergies. raw nuts (seems to be the ones with skin, walnut almond, hemp) he can eat cashews and peanuts., raw carrots, peaches, apple skin

i can digest raw veggies! i do hear that it is a popular complaint be people though that they can't.

I've been having the SAME problem lately! I've had terrible stomach aches for a few weeks, and I really had to cut down on my raw veggies. Raw greens and veggies with a high-water content, like cucumbers, have been ok, but I haven't been able to get near a raw piece of broccoli in a few weeks. It's made me try lots of new cooked veggie recipes, so I'm trying to look at it as a GOOD thing!

Hope your tummy feels better!

The raw veggie thing is a common problem. Raw fruits/veggies are tough for the digestive system to breakdown. They don't call it "roughage" for nothing!

Oh my, I have the same issue - especially with squash or zucchini. I used to have horrible stomach aches when I would eat them raw. I've gotten used to very, very lightly steaming my veg and that totally eliminated all issues but still left that satisfactory crispiness. :) oh, and I'm allergic to avocado. Living in San Diego, this is absolutely heartbreaking!

My acupuncture doctor told me there are hidden mild toxins produce farmers spray on raw produce. So, washing/rinsing them in water wouldn't help it. Steaming vegetables are safer. Even the frozened vegetables would be good to steam. Mexican, oriental restaurants usually have steamed vegetables when dining out or ordering takeout. Oh, Tupperware has a cool steamer for microwaves.

Have had one for years (an older style Tupperware steamer). They work fantastic; and it's quick & easy to clean!

Actor Jeremy Piven always & only ate fish and no other meats until he got sick from it. He had high levels of mercury poisoning from eating fish for several years. So too much of a good thing may not always be safe or healthy.

Have you ever been tested for Celiac Disease? Before giving up your raw veggies, you may want to consider this. There are a host of different symptoms, many are GI related. 1 in 133 people in the US have Celiac Disease and 97% of those are UNdiagnosed. The test is a simple Celiac Panel blood test screen, then if that is positive, you would go for further testing. It may be worth a shot.

Both my son & I have Celiac and follow a gluten-free diet. I also can't eat seeds such as sesame & poppy seeds.

There is a lot more info on Celiac & the gluten-free diet on my blog:
