Make A Difference Monday: SERCATION!

Good morning friends! I had a wonderful 8 hours of sleep, and am feeling a lot better. Not 100% but I am sure I will be there soon. I did some detox yoga this morning, in honor of my detoxifing week. I am not doing a total detox(not kicking the caffeine) but just eating REAL FOOD all week!

I am not Catholic, but I like the meaning behind Lent, and since FAT TUESDAY is just around the corner, I figured I better choose something to give up for 40 days QUICK! I toyed with coffee, but that’s a negative! I think I am going to do sweets again, because right now I can’t keep my hands off of them! What would you give up for 40 days????

MORNING EATS

This morning I was so excited to have oats, because I wanted to try my wheatberries in them!

Oh they were pleasantly delicious! I added about 2 tablespoons to my oats and I couldn’t really taste them but the texture of them was nice and chewy. Hopefully the extra fiber will keep me full!

I also added PB2 in the pot while cooking, added a creamy texture to the oats and a great PB flavor! There is also some toasted pecans , golden raisins, almond milk and a little Honest Food Plank.

I also had a cup of black coffee, and my Emergency C!

MAKE A DIFFERENCE MONDAY: SERCATION!

I wanted to talk about some more volunteer opportunities, to help us get out there and serve our communities. I was reading a magazine recently, can’t remember which one, and it was talking about serving on your next vacation! I thought, what an idea, I have never thought about doing something in the community for the week that I am off! I shall call this SERCATION, Service+Vacation.

So what kinds of things could you do on a week vacation? How about working at your local Boys and Girls Club. You could even do a bit of traveling and help out with Habitat for Humanity or even do it in your own neighborhood. Or how about volunteering at a local YMCA, or even your local Community Center to tutor kids. There are opportunities everywhere!

Would you be willing to take a week long vacation serving someone else? I have done a lot of mission work, but never on my vacation time! Man what an idea.

I would love to do some time of medical service mission someday. I am really impressed by those who use their vacation time to help others in need. I should try to give up Diet Coke for 40 days!

the church trip i took in 8th grade to detroit was one of the best things i've ever done (we worked at Freedom House-- refugee temp stay)-- rebuilt playground, fixed doorknobs, built shelves, cleaned, etc.-- really it's a life highlight.

I would love to do a sercation, but I don't think I could ever convince the hubby!

I am toying with the idea of giving up alcohol for lent. I am not Catholic, but my husband is.

I heart my red wine though!

If I serve for vacation it would be one of those where you travel to the rain forest!!

I was also considering giving up sweets for lent. I think i will need to be more specific though or it will fail.

You read that in this month's Domino! How funny, I was going to post about the same topic as well.

I am involved with my local Habitat and they often do Habitat trips to other countries, to help build homes there. This year, our Habitat is going to Honduras and I am def looking into it!

vacation with a purpose is what we used to call it when giving up a week and going on a mission trip or something like that...and it is so rewarding to serve...

Mmm, wheat berries look awesome. I'm glad you confirmed the chewy texture because I'd been hoping for such marvels!

I'm glad you're feeling better, Bobbi Dearest!

My aunt did a "sercation" in Africa she did a one week safari and then helped around a village for another week. She said it was the most rewarding thing she's ever done.

During my senior year of college (2004) I spent Spring Break in Jacksonville FL working for Habitat. It was actually a great week.

I'm Catholic and may just try to complain less and be more thoughtful towards my hubby.

I'm also not catholic, but started doing my own version of lent a few years ago. I've done sweets and that's a good one, but I haven't decided if I'm doing it this year yet. Hmmmmm....I'll have to think more on it! I really want to try wheatberries! Where do you get them?! What does the packaging look like?

I'm giving up internet for non-school purposes. And maybe pb or cheese.

I have never done a missions trip but it is on my life "to-do" list. I want to do mission's work with my Dad (who is a pastor) in a thrid-world country in the next few years.
What could be more gratifying than serving so fully and whole heartedly?
Great question!

Your oats look amazing, as usual.

I polished off the last of my smoked almonds today at work. Those were my favorites. SO good :)

Thanks again!

I gave up diet coke last year and it was like the first time ever that I actually kept it up after lent!
